Lessons
At Rose City Mahjong we believe that small group lessons work best for learning the game.
We recognize that everyone learns at a different pace and we encourage cooperative learning. We use the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card and teach NMJL rules.
We use memory tricks, we repeat things in many different ways so that everyone understands, we are patient, and we encourage laughter over frustration!
We recommend at least two lessons to start, followed by some guided open play sessions. Mahjong takes a while to “sink in” and the best way to learn the game is by playing the game!
Lesson Information
Lesson #1: learn the basics

review the basics with a focus on

Lesson #3 & #4: review & play
Review the tiles, wall set-up, dealing, Charleston strategy, and gameplay rules.
These lessons focus on guided play to help players become more comfortable and confident with the ceremony & rules and be ready to play in a larger group.

Beginner Bootcamp

An introduction to the game with an emphasis on learning the tiles, game set-up, dealing, Charleston, and the many rules. Everything you need to know to start your mahjong journey!
Slower Paced Beginner Series
4 lessons/2 hours each: $200
In our 4-Lesson Beginner Lesson Series, you will learn all the basics of mahjong at a more leisurely pace with plenty of time to practice the game in a small-group setting,
